When trying to train your pup, one of the best things you can do to make the whole thing easier on both you and your pup is to make use of a crate. The crate, when used properly, will become your puppies den, and will be his place to go when he wants to be quiet.
Using a crate is ideal when you are trying to potty train your pup, dogs very rarely make a mess where they sleep, so using the crate to help in this process should make it much faster.
You should always remember though, never to use the crate as any kind of punishment, this is his safe place.
It’s to be expected that your puppy may whine and make a fuss when you first introduce him to his new crate, as it is all new to him, and he has probably never seen a crate before.
Always start off with short periods in the crate and reward him for positive actions – if he makes a fuss don’t tell him off, just ignore him. If you start to shout at him or let him out when he makes a noise, he will think that is what he has to do.
It can seem like hard work for the first few days, but believe me, it is well worth sticking with it as the benefits will far outweigh a couple of days of work getting him used to his crate. It rarely takes any puppy or even grown dog, more than 3 or 4 days to become accustomed to being in the crate.
